Although the parody picked at black women's unfair position in Hollywood, it was a interesting way to really show just how powerful black women are in the world. I absolutely love this skit! Not only did each of the actresses step out of their more serious casted characters, the women stepped up to the plate and delivered a message to Hollywood that needed to be heard.
You ask why can't black women be in the spotlight and be like Oprah and Beyoncé? Loretta Divine says it's because black women traded credit for freedom and control. Alfre Woodard jokes and says that when they were kicked out of "The Operatives" when they decided to be in the spotlight. It's unfortunate that black women aren't casted in dominate Hollywood films as significant main characters. As a fan of classic and modern film, I would love to see more black women not only casted for main roles in a Hollywood film but to also see women directing and producing.
The parody quotes "if you control the media, you control the world," one thing black women have some power over whether it's negative or positive. The take home message in the skit is "when black women stick together, we are the most powerful force on the universe," a powerful message that for women of color not only in Hollywood but throughout the world. We have way more power than we allow ourselves to have and if we can stop fighting one another (especially on television), the world will truly be ours.
Watch the skit below and tell us what you think! Do black women really run Hollywood?
