Black-ish Takes Coveted Time Spot After Modern Family On ABC

Last Wednesday, Black-ish premiered on ABC at a coveted time spot following the hit show, Modern Family at 9:30/8:30 p.m.. Black-ish is definitely the first of its kind and innovative. The show chronicles the life of an upper class Black family and its struggles to maintain a sense of their culture and history while navigating through a majorly White environment. Through laughs and jokes, Black-ish manages to squeeze in relevant and current strifes that successful Black families face in everyday life.

I love everything about this show and its concept. Most of all, I love ABC for greenlighting this show and allowing America the weekly opportunity to watch a Black family in a positive, uplifting light. Since The Cosby Show in the 80s, America has not seen a well functioning Black family on a major network. Consequently, everyone needs to watch this show and support it in order to keep it on the air. The show discusses topics that are very relevant to Black people in the 21st century. No longer are we maids, janitors, nannies, or workers with menial positions, we are now bosses, CEOs, millionaires, doctors, lawyers and face a new set of challenges. How to keep our identity in a world that does not look like us? How to instill the hardships our ancestors endured for our better today? Or do we allow the upcoming generations to be blind to race at the expense of their past?
