J. Cole Delivers A Powerful Performance on David Letterman

Talk about a rapper breaking barriers. Last night, J. Cole made an appearance on "The Late Show With David Letterman" to promote his new #1 album 2014 Forest Hill Drive. Instead of performing a track from the album, Cole performed a song "Be Free" with an added verse he released in back in August following the death of Mike Brown. He dedicated his performance to the men in this country that have lost their lives to violence in communities and police brutality. Instead of rocking a stylist outfit, J. Cole performed in an all black sweatsuit and delivered a powerful emotional performance.

It is common now to see rappers make appearances on late night television shows such as the David Letterman show, but its less common for Hip-Hop artist to come and make such powerful, political and radical statements through music such as what J. Cole did last night. Through much of his music, he speaks imbalances in the system and speaks truthfully on what its like being a black man in America. Beginning with his hands in his pocket and eyes closed, he bared his soul singing with mighty passion last night on stage. I'm sure many in the audience were a little taken back. Here's a few memorable lines from the song:

"All we wanna do is break the chains off, all we wanna do is be free...
Tell me why every time I step outside why I see my people die?
I'm letting you know, it ain't no gun they make that can kill my soul...
I turn the TV on I see no brothers with degrees lately...
Don't just stand around."

If nothing else, J. Cole might have just snagged one of the best moments on television this year. Catch up Kanye West! Congrats to J. Cole on having the #1 album right now as well as possibly being a newly engaged man to his longtime girlfriend. Watch his chilling performance below:
