"The Aphilliates" DJ Drama, new Def Jam VP of A&R Don Cannon, and DJ Sense introduced the newest members of "The Academy" in Atlanta last week. The Aphilliates are known for exposing the underground mixtape world in Hip Hop particularly in the South to mainstream, helping artist such as T.I., Young Jeezy, Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne become some of the biggest names in Hip Hop. The Academy started by DJ Drama, Don Cannon, and DJ Sense recognizes talented breakout DJs in music and will learn more about the skill of being a DJ. DJ, as well Dram, Cannon, and Sense specifically picked 20 DJ's to become the new members of The Academy.
The Academy recognizes not only notable DJs in Hip Hop and radio, but songwriters, producers, artists, and photographers from all genres not just Hip Hop.
The launch of The Academy was housed in Atlanta with two days of events put on a number of record labels and Enchanted PR such as a Meet-N-Greet, Celebrity Bowling, and the "Salute the Mic" Showcase. The showcase had appearances and performances by August Alisna, Young Dro, Keke Wyatt, Mike Will, Jermaine Dupri, OMG Girlz, Migos, and more. Of course nothing happens in ATL without a turn up, so the Day 1 party was held at Magic City, followed by Day 2 at hotspot Compound.
While this was all fun and games, The Academy did take time to speak to young men at King Middle School for the "Young Men of Influence Award Ceremony." Good look for DJ Drama, DJ Sense, and Don Cannon. Watch out for more of The Academy.
