[Watch] The Tanning of America Pt. 1

Last night VH1 premiered part 1 of 4 of The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop. The documentary derived from the 2011 book written by Steve Stoute, who walks us through the periods leading into Hip-Hop music, and the takeover it had on American culture present day.

Part one of the documentary "Word is Born," takes us through the 1970's and 1980's, the time period in America right before the birth of Hip Hop. Narrated by author Steve Stoute, he stated "I can draw a direct line from  1520 Sedgwick Avenue the apartment complex in the Bronx where Hip Hop was born, to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," showing Hip Hop's influence on Barak Obama's presidential election.

Rick Rubin founder of Def Jam was one of the first recognized whites who played an intricate role in Hip Hop culture. He said "I didn't think of Hip Hop as black music, I thought of it as new music."
Throughout the document series, you'll see prominent faces in Hip Hop culture such as Russell Simmons, Rick Rubin, Jay Z, Dr. Dre, Nas, Rev Run, Mariah Carey, Mona Scott Young and many more.
