Award Winning Poet Maya Angelou Dies At 86

News this morning confirmed that Dr. Maya Angelou passed away in her home in Winston Salem, NC. Dr. Angelou has suffered from health disparities over the past few years, causing her to cancel many appearances and limit her travels. Maya Angelou most recently served as a professor at Wake Forest University. She was just turned 86 years old just over a month ago.
Maya Angelou was a legendary award winning author, poet, educator, actress, and much more. She was best known as a civil rights activist and poet. Her famous poems empowered people all over the world. When she spoke, her voice had the ability to make people stop and listen. She was a winner of several prominent awards and has received over thirty honorary doctoral degrees. Maya Angelou helped pave the way for black women in  the arts & entertainment, education, and activism.

Her writings spoke on real life, struggles, beauty, childhood, spirituality and so much more. She has been a trail blazer in all that she has done, and is respected by persons of all generations, genders, and ethnicities. Dr. Angelou's beautiful spirit was never hard to spot. Her calm personality, wisdom and distinctive voice made her truly one of a kind. Her words have enlightened, healed, and built self-esteem for so many women and girls.

Today we will not mourn her death, but celebrate her life and legacy! Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and those closest to her. Thank YOU Maya Angelou for a lifetime of greatness, a true angel you are!
