Lifetime has a new movie about the late singer Aaliyah and to many a surprise the lead role has been given to young star Zendaya Coleman. Zendaya started her career as a Disney star on the hit show Shake It Up and has moved gracefully into the music world with the release of her single "Replay." Zendaya auditioned for the role, along with 106 & Park's Keshia Chante and actress Tristin Mays. According to some speculation, it may be that Keisha will play the adult role of Aaliyah and Zendaya the child/preteen aged Aaliyah. Neither party has confirmed this speculation, but it's only a matter of time before a statement will be released.
The biopic film which is based on the best-selling biography by Christopher Farley, Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, is tentatively titled Aaliyah: Princess of R&B. It will follow the timeline from Aaliyah's discovery on Star Search to her tragic death at 22. Aaliyah:Princess of R&B will be produced by Aaliyah Productions, Inc. with Howard Braunstein and Debra Martin Chase serving as executive producers. Bradley Walsh will be directing from Michael Elliot’s script. The movie is set to shoot this summer and will be released sometime this fall.
After some backlash from Twitter about not being fit to play Aaliyah, the young star went to tweet:
She's been an inspiration and influence in my whole career, her talent still shines brighter then ever, all I wanna do is honor her

I'm just a 17 year old girl who got cast to play one of her biggest inspirations #positive

Positivity really is key when it comes to dealing with all the comments. Similar to those Jennifer Lopez and more recently Lil Mama had to endure when they were cast to play Selena and Left Eye respectively. Zendaya who was runner-up on Dancing With the Stars, is also set to record four of Aaliyah's hit songs for the film. At 17, she is one of the biggest crazes in the tween world, but do you think she is ready to take on the coveted role as Aaliyah? Will she live up to that hype? Photo: Instagram
