In a world where history repeats itself and arts reflects time, it is no surprise that we're living in a time period with similar events to those of 50 years ago. Officially releasing this weekend nationwide in theaters, Selma captures the Civil Rights Movement in Selma, Alabama with a group of young individuals know as SNCC and leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. In a sensitive time period with the deaths of several black lives in America alone and injustices within the system, Selma couldn't have been delivered at better time. Selma has been proclaimed one powerful movie that is a must see! Directed by Ava DuVernay, Selma was nominated in three categories at this year's Golden Globe Awards.
Although the film itself didn't not win an award last night, it did take home the award for "Best Original Song" performed by Common and John Legend. Both extremely talented artist always have great ways in which they convey meaningful messages through music. The original members of Kanye West's G.O.O.D Music label accepted the Golden Globe last night for their song "Glory," which was presented by the legendary Prince.
The words delivered by Common immediately went viral leaving the world inspired in awe. Admitting that the film has changed his humanity and that he is a true reflection of each person affected by the ways of the world, he evoked emotion within the audience at the Golden Globes and made everyone stop and pay attention.
Selma premiered in select cities this past Christmas and was released nationwide Friday, January 9th coming in at the second spot at the box office for opening weekend behind Taken 3. Watch John Legend and Common's speech below.
