Did you know that before this past Sunday's Oscar's Awards, only 31 out of the 2,947 winners of Academy Awards were black? Shocking? Now you can count Common and John Legend, who took the win for the best original song "Glory" from the movie Selma.
The two winners of the award were featured in the 2014 film, Selma, which was an historical drama film based on the actions of Martin Luther King Jr. and the events that followed after the passing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Common and John Legend 'Glory', which touches upon the topic of racial injustice from the past to present, was performed at the Oscar's before the duo won the award. In their performance, they enacted and depicted the Selma to Montgomery march. At the end of the performance, it was received by a standing ovation from the crowd including a tearful David Oyelowo, the actor who played Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Oprah Winfrey, Chris Pine, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Big Sean, and more.
After being called on stage to accept the award, the duo presented a powerful speech. In the speech, the duo reminded the world that "'Selma' is now, because the struggle for justice is right now".
