The early phases of the making of the Lifetime movie has seen many hardships. The late singers family was opposed to the making of the biopic, threatening to sue. Despite the threat, Lifetime continued with the project, originally staring Disney Channel's own, Zendaya Coleman. After much disapproval from fans about not resembling the late singer, Coleman decided to walk away from the project. Coleman believed that the Lifetime adaption of the her favorite singers life was not the right project for her.
