"Man look, y'all really wanna know who did it?...Man Dale Earnhardt Jr. dawg...forreal Dale Earnhardt Jr. man, thank you dawg....from me to you, you my n*gga forreal..." Remember this line from J. Cole's "Note to Self" song? His joke about knowing NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. landed him the cover of ESPN's Music Issue with the fellow Carolinian. Pretty cool right?"
J.Cole has made it clear to the world that he is a force to be reckoned with since stepping onto the music scene in 2011. His reflective lyricism based on his life and his views about what's happening in the world has shown the world his intelligence and abilities to captivate and relate to people across all racial barriers. One person in specifics, Dale Earnhardt Jr., professional-American NASCAR driver from North Carolina, was a fan of Cole's. In the interview, Earnhardt stated that Cole's "Power Trip" single was a song he played religiously before racing. Dale Earnhardt Jr. found out about Cole's music while browsing through Pandora one day. "When you like a guy's music and you find out he's from where you're from, you tend to start to follow him,” Earnhardt stated. J.Cole was surprised at the fact that Dale Earnhardt Jr. was playing his music. According to ESPN, J. Cole stated "What is Dale Earnhardt Jr. doing playing my shit? How did he even find out about it? You don’t think somebody on that level would ever hear your stuff."
From there, the NASCAR driver and rapper corresponded via Twitter. The Twitter transactions caught the attention of ESPN, who decided to interview the two about how their connection came about.
Music has been proven to cross many barriers. Is it a surprise to know that J.Cole's music was able to reach the ears of a NASCAR driver?
